Herndon’s perspective of the great and near-great in Washington spans modern 20th century history. Totally familiar with life in the nation's capital, his first memory is that of a boy growing up off Sheridan Circle in what’s now known as Embassy Row. He watched the lamplighters quietly start the fires in the street lamps of an evening anti waited for them to return in the morning to extinguish the flame. There was a “gentleness" in the city in those days, he says. No one locked a door and Washington, D.C. was still a sleepy Southern town.
