If one were to look only at the numbers following last week's General Assembly elections, the conclusion might easily be drawn that the only result this summer’s and fall’s hard campaigning was a “Mexican standoff. ’’
Going into the election, the Democrats occupied bo seats in the 100 member House of Delegates while the Republicans claimed 34 seats. One was held by an independent. In the Senate, the Democrats held 32 seats and the Republicans eight.
When the smoke cleared in the wake of Tuesday’s voting, these figures remained unchanged. There will, however, be a number of new faces in each house from both parties.
Still, although they suffered no aggregate loss, the election was a bitter disappointment to the GOP. The Democrats, on the other hand, hailed it as a promising victory.
