Salary Scale
“In order to secure and retain the best teachers for our young people, it is mandatory to establish a more attractive salary scale that is competitive with surrounding counties and localities.” Thus reads the committees sixth recommendation. Extra pay for additional duties is also recommended: “Supplemental duty pay should be reviewed and appropriate action taken to eliminate the deficiencies.”
The Nation at Risk report urged: “Salaries for the teaching profession should be increased and should be professionally competitive, market sensitive and performance-based.”
Time on Task
Finally, the committee advised better use of the time students spend in school to maximize learning opportunities. Said the Nation at Risk report, “The time available for learning should be expanded through better classroom management and organization of the school day. The superintendent’s committee offered specific suggestions on how to do this. To allow more “time on task” the committee suggested “efforts must be made to reduce interruptions of the school day by factors not conducive to teaching and learning.”
The advisory committee would also like to see the addition of more “minicourses” and summer workshops for remedial work or advanced studies.
