was a friend named Bill Simmons. “Brother Bill,” as Herndon calls him. was a member of the White House detachment of secret service under Warren (1. Harding and later became White House receptionist. He was best known as FDR's double. During times that the president's absence from the country was best kept secret for security reasons, elaborate tours were staged with Simmons touring the country from coast to coast by railroad and waving at the crowds. The profile was right—he only had to add a snap-brim hat and cigarette holders, sit in the presidential car and wave. The train never stopped. Simmons just rode all the way across the country and back smiling and displaying that cigarette holder. One of the times he took a “presidential tour" was while Roosevelt was at Yalta.
