what disappointed but no one can take away the pride. Winning third place out of all the single “A” schools in Virginia is quite an accomplishment,” coach Ann Speiker said. “It was a fitting climax for this year’s cross country season.”
And indeed, the cross country Panthers set a high mark in 1983.
They were in first place in the Bull Run District at the end of the regular season, missing first place only once. That slip by just two points came in the final trimeet with Strasburg. The Rams played the role of spoiler from then on for Rappahannock. They again edged the Panthers in the district finals, dropped to third behind RCHS in regional and then came back to defeat the Panthers in last Saturday’s state championships.
At Piedmont, they placed runners in seventh, 13th, 14th, 16th and 38th to count in the standings.
Behind Keithley’s fourth place finish over the 3.1 mile course were Ronnie Atkins (17th), Chris Caperton (21st), Craig Kenyon (32nd) and Ricky Shaw (47th). Only the placings of top five runners from each school were tabulated for team standings. Also running for Rappahannock, were Elwood Dodson (59th) and David Dodson (83rd).
