This last tribute particularly delights Rappahannock’s Herndon who sings a strong tenor regularly in the choir at Trinity Episcopal in Washington, Virginia, and previously sang in the choir at Epiphany on G Street in D.C.
He believes that the town of Herndon, Virginia, was named after a statue of this first lady’s father William Lewis Herndon, a naval captain who went down with his ship off Cape Hatte/as during a storm in 1857.
His statue at Annapolis is notorious in its own right—the “plebes” must climb to the top of the Herndon statue in order to earn favor with their peers in a sort of modern rite of passage. Maurice Herndon heard that the city in Northern Virginia was named after this statue when a persuasive navy captain argued before the founding fathers for honoring his alma mater.
