Alice Walker, who won the 1982 Pulitzer prize for her powerful and beautiful novel, “The Color Purple,” has a collection of nonfiction, “In Search of our Mothers' Gardens." The theme of the novel is the subject of several essays in this book, including the title piece—black women in relation to their mothers, their families, to black men, to the world.
