Roots In Rappahannock
Jane “earned her carpenter’s apron” while they spent 11 years building the weekend house which has grown over the years into their present home. They did all the work themselves with a little help from neighbors during a “barn-raising”. When it came time to retire, they chose Rappahannock over New Hampshire, British Columbia and other favorite vacation spots “because it suddenly dawned on me that all our people are from here,—the Greens of Culpeper, the Gordons...”
Their home, Greenock, is named after the original Greenock which burned long ago in Culpeper—the home of Jefferson’s contemporary Jones Green.
Throughout their home are various relics showing a continued line of family connections to past presidents and others high in the public eye. Herndon has one of Andy Jackson’s notorious black thorn walking sticks and the eagle from the flagpole which preceeded Teddy Roosevelt and the Roughriders during their charge up San Juan Hill.
He isn’t sure how the family obtained some of these items; they’ve just always been around. “I grew up with them.”
