speeding through Rock Creek Parkway—at an incredible rate exceeding 15 miles per hour. Later he saw the bicycle patrol chase and catch speeding Model Ts. Those officers were his boyhood heroes. “1 was impressed with their huge leg muscles. They could peddle so fast,” he says.
But Herndon was not to grow up to have huge leg muscles because of a bout with polio. In fact, he says he was lucky to survive at all. Then one day while he was so ill, he looked out the window and saw horse drawn wagons each with about 25 wooden boxes tied on. He was told they were coffins for the 1917 influenza epidemic.
Herndon was nursed back to health by the three old-maid aunts who raised him. They were registered nurses and his mouth still puckers at the memory of the medicines they were constantly administering. His mother was working in Fredericksburg; his father was dead.
