Propane Users Beware

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Robertshaw Controls Company want users to replace certain old liquid propane gas water-heating systems—and they’re willing to pay $160 to help consumers do it.

The systems, known as the Unitrol A-l series, due to their age, may have Amity safety control devices. These controls can ultimately wear out and have been linked to explosions and fires in which there have been deaths, personal injuries and property damage.

The safety controls were manufactured between 1946 and 1966, and last distributed in 1960. Fewer than 1,000 are believed to remain in service.

The Unitrol A-l series was produced in several styles, and may carry the name "Unitrol,” Robertshaw-Grayson,” or “Rudd.” Consumers who have questions can call Robertshaw Control Company in Richmond at (804) 281-0774, or contact their local LP gas distributor.

• More Marked Cars Coming

Unmarked cars still will be part of the fleet, state police noted. The current percent distribution of marked cars to unmarked can is 50-60, and may not change for several yean.
