The genius of God is that God’s controlling interests do not suffer when God’s will is resisted. God’s initiative in human history is the Cross; in a life of service and self-sacrifice. The Lord’s greatness is not in pushing people around, as if God were the larger version of a human dictator.
God does not directly determine everything that happens. To God’s credit is the fact that God triumphs in spite of this. The Lord is bringing human history to a sane conclusion without compromising human freedom, and at the same time without compromising God’s integrity and God’s sovereignty.
