Gypsy Moth Here
The gypsy moth invasion from the Northeastern states in spreading into Northern Virginia, according to a report from 7th District Rep. J. Kenneth Robinson.
The gypsy moth is moving onto the Blue Ridge and spreading out. Rappahannock is listed among the counties that will be touched.
Gypsy moths are caterpillars that gorge themselves from May through early July. In the Northeast, gypsy moths defoliated hundreds of thousands of acres of forest. A single defoliation can kill some softwoods, and two or more defoliations can kill many types of hardwoods.
Any serious infestation on private property should be reported to the county extension agent, who can discuss ways to control the past, the report suggests.

C. B. Johnson of Woodville turned 90 on May 25. The family celebrated with an open house-birthday party event to which people came from all over Rappahannock County and elsewhere.
The Johnson family has lived in Woodville nearly 250 years, and almost all were spent living on Red Oak Mountain. See story, page 11.
