As an employee of the Cincinnati Ballet he earns $13,000 for eight and a half months of work. When asked how he felt about other forms of dance, Saltons tall responded, “I don’t separate the different forms. I’ve studied jazz and modern dance. Ballet is my speciality.”
Philip also has contended with a learning disability. Pursuing a love of music, he attempted to play flute as an adolescent, but was unable to read music, since he saw the notes in reversed order.
He found that free-form jazz was the key to mastering the instrument. He has also had to cope with the problem of reversals in dancing and has achieved a great deal despite the added effort his handicap demands.
When asked what the future holds, he acknowledged that, like an athlete, he must face a career change as the strain on his body takes it’s toll (he has arthritis in his knees and ankles).
