Jay Scott Chaffee of AmtariDe was found guilty by Judge John Alexander of driving while intoxicated (DWI), speeding and driving on a suspended license. Chaffee's license previously had been suspended for three yean in 1963 for two DWI’a.
David Ronkk, Chaffee’s attorney, questioned arresting officer, trooper C. A. Moore, on the distance Moore stayed behind the defender's car during the pursuit. Konick also questioned the legitimacy of the alcohol test given Chaffee. Judge Alexander ruled the test valid.
Konick requested that Chaffee be Bent to the Virginia Automobile Safety Action Program (VASAP). The request was denied, however, because Chaffee no longer possessed an operator’s license.
Chaffee was sentenced to 30 days in jail, to be served on weekends. His license was suspended an additional three years, and he was fined 1200, phis (20 in costs.
On a charge of not having a valid inspection sticker, Chaffee complied with the law.
