Commencement exercises on May 19,1964, at the Virginia Military Institute brought baccalaureate degrees and military commissions to 222 graduating first classmen who received their diplomas from Gen. Sam S. Walker, VMI superintendent, following a commencement address by the Secretary of the Navy John F. Lehman, Jr.
Among the 1984 graduates is Douglas G. Nichols, of Flint Hill; who received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and a commission as a second lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force Reserve.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul A. Nichols, he was graduated from Rappahannock County High School before entering the Institute.
