Captain Von Trapp was played in a controlled and straightforward style by Bob Baines— it was totally in keeping with his character and emphasized the times when he raised his voice or used a significant pause or inflection. He conveyed his wealth, his military background, his sense of discipline and his love for his children with small gestures and direct use of eye contact, and emerged as a strong, believable character.
Jennifer Shorb’s performance as Elsa Schraeder, Von Trapp’s fiance before Maria came into his life, was similarly understated— she was a serious and icy contrast to Maria’s energy, but unlike Von Trapp had no desire to be otherwise. Her interactions with Maria, whom she suspected as a rival before anyone else had considered it, were carried off with a good balance of “pointed subtlety.”
These two remote and self-contained characters were not left alone to bask in their reserve, however— they were made a trio by their outspoken and disheveled friend, Max, who was as reserved as a large, friendly and opinionated bear. Jim McCullough’s performance as Von Trapp’s friend, was wide open and *ftill of large gestures, .conveying just the type of contrasts needed.
