She is placed as a governess in the home of former Navy Captain Georg Von Trapp, a widower with seven children who all dress in uniform, march in formation in lieu of playing and hardly know their commander/father. Maria’s gentle hand guides the von Trapps into a family again, of which she too is a member by the play's end.
The well-crafted opening scene, a twilight outside the abbey with the nuns singing and performing their final tasks before closing the gates for the night, demonstrated the strong singing and excellent use of space that characterized the show.
Ginny Hickman was ideally cast as Maria. Her clear and unfettered singing and natural manner gave her interpretation of Maria its winning quality. Her performance was thoughtful and appropriate throughout, but she especially shone in her scenes with the children — when all seven of her charges pile into bed with her during a thunderstorm and she engages them in a lively singing of “The Lonely
