The Mother Abbess was played by Marie Davis, whose exceptional voice was well tested on the difficult song she sings to Maria “Climb Every Mountain,” the strong final of Act I. She and Maria perform a duet of “My Favorite Things” which gave Ms, Davis an opportunity to show another kind of vocal strength, as it was sung lightly and with a touch of Maria’s youthful energy. Sister Bertha (Julie Burke), Sister Margaretta (Aney Massie) and Sister Sophia (Denise Shorb) sang together with animation and control in “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria,” maintaining the humor of the scene without losing their dignified bearing. All of the nuns and novices had another opportunity for a fine piece of ensemble singing following the gala marriage in Act II of Maria
