traveling in Virginia, for business and pleasure, spent an average $9.8 million a day for food, lodging, services and transportation.
This year, at least twothirds of the American public is expected to travel to a destination 100 miles or more from home. Last year, Americans took one billion such trips, more than twice as many as were reported in the 1972 National Travel Survey.
That we have set aside this week to acknowledge the benefits that tourism bestows on this nation is therefore fitting. I hope that every Virginian will take this occasion to reflect upon these benefits.
Tourism is a vital part of American life. It is our perfect freedom.
