According to the U.S. Department of Labor, payroll jobs in travel-related businesses have increased 183 percent since 1958, or more than twice as fast as the growth in total U.S. payroll employment during the same period. As recently as 1979, the travel and tourism industry was responsible for creating 35 percent of all new jobs. In 1980, it provided 28 percent of the new employment generated that year. i 'In Virginia, travel and ■ tourism is the third largest employer* in the state, providing jobs for more than 83,000 persons at an annual payroll of over $679 million.
