Some suggest a “permis< sive will” of God. But what is a “permissive will?” Is it that God “permits” us to go the wrong way when God could do otherwise? Is it not rather that the Lord “permits” us to choose our own way, and to actually go our own way?
It is meaningless to say we are created free, only to have God’s will forced upon us. Freedom to obey is also freedom to rebel. And God is taking the risk. Love always takes the risk. Ask two people in love!
God does not want mules who must be compelled to obey. God wants people who freely accept God’s counsel. God wants a relationship based on mutual trust; not on fear and appeasement.
