line. “Some of the old galvanized is getting problems; there are a lot of thin spots in it,” he offered.
Whorton said the primary water line into town was made of cast steel. That main line, Whorton added, is “normally no problem.” It’s the secondary lines, made of galvanized, that are cause for concern, Whorton explained. “(Town officials) say they want to replace (the lines) if they can get the money,” Whorton said.
Why turn off the entire town for a minor leak? That’s another problem town officials hope to eliminate soon, according to Repairman Pullen. Pullen explained there are only two shut-off points in the system: one at the main pump house on Piedmont Avenue and another at the corner of Piedmont and Main. The lade of shut-off valves generally makes it necessary to turn off the entire system, however minor a particular leak may be.
“We want to put in some more (shutoff valves) and hope it won’t be long now,” Pullen said.
It could be a long time, however, before the Town of Washington can come up with the capital necessary to replace the galvanized secondary knee, which sprawl like blood vessels throughout the town. The last time Town Council received a bid for repair of galvanized lines was six
