Tom Brokaw Scolded By Mom
A Rappahannock County mother of two, offended by a statement NBC-TV anchorman Tom Brokaw made during the Republican National Convention, may voice her view on national television next Monday.
April M. H eddies ton of Woodville was filmed Sept. 8 by an NBC affiliate crew from Charlottesville. Her opinion is scheduled to be aired Sept. 17 on the “Today Show.”
Heddleston wrote to NBC in New York shortly after Brokaw interviewed Nancy Reagan. During the interview, Brokaw reportedly asked the first lady of her daugther Do you want Patti to be a career person or “just a stay-at-home Mom?”
“He insulted every mother who chooses to raise her children at home rather than pursue her career,” said Heddleston, a former elementary teacher. “Would he have asked Nancy if she wanted her daughter to be *just a lawyer, just a janitor or just a newscaster?'
“It hurts when the media belittles one of the most important jobs, that of the mother.”
Heddleston was contacted by NBC within two weeks of writing the letter, she said. She is scheduled to appear on a new "Today Show” feature called “Letters to the Editor,” according to NBC’s Kathy Paterno.
