An ad-hoc coalition of neighbors won their battle last week to prevent construction of a non-denominational religious retreat in sparsely-populated northwest Fauquier County.
The county Board of Zoning Appeals on Sept. 6 voted unanimously to deny an Arlington couple permission to build the retreat to host as many as 300 overnight guests on a 241-acre farm near Hume. The decision ended ' a fierce two month debate. ■» Catting it a proposal for a “Hume Hilton,” neighbors packed the boiarffs meetings on three occasions to register their opposition to the plan. Opponents said inadequate roads, environmental concerns and a potential , change in the character of their farming community prompted their campaign against the proposal.
Drs. William B. and Elizabeth Powell, who want to build the retreat, said they may take their plans to Culpeper County where they also own property.
County May Say No To Sludge
Rappahannock County’s Board of Supervisors is considering an ordinance that would prohibit the use of sewage sludge as fertilizer in the county.
In their Sept. 10 meeting, board members pointed to controversy stirred in neighboring counties by permits for sludge use.
The question, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, is whether or not Rappahannock legally can ban sludge use in the county. No permits for its use have been granted in the county.
Supervisors say they will hold a public hearing on possible use of sludge in the county. No hearing date has been set.
Teenager Wins Reston Triathalon
Arnold Rieder, 15, was the overall winner is last weekend’s triathalon in Reston. Rieder completed the course — a one mile swim, 23-mile bike race and 6.2-mile run — in two hours and 12 minutes. <
