New Steeplechase Facility Opens
Great Meadow, the nation’s newest steeplechase course, opened to the public Sunday.
More than 3,000 spectators watched exhibitions by skydivers, fox hunters, carriage drivers, pony clubs, military bands and steeplechase jockeys on the lush 200-acre course near The Plains in Fauquier County.
Administered by a non-profit foundation, the facility will host its first sanctioned steepjechase meet, The
International Gold Cup.
Great Meadow also will host the popular Virginia Gold Cup Races in May 1985.
Loudouners Complain About Trash
Residents of the heavily populated eastern portion of Loudoun County are putting pressure on their supervisors to tighten up the county’s Nuisance Ordinance.
Homeowners have complained of junk, weeds and bags of trash stored in neighbors’ yards. The proposal drew a cool reception from a majority of supervisors during a public hearing last week, and several supervisors suggested that Sterling Park, where most of the problems exist, incorporate as a town, or that homeowners seek redress through civil action.
Murder Linked To Gambling
A 26-year-old Herndon man, James E. Herbert, was shot and tilled Saturday morning in Reston after an argument over a gambling game.
A Herndon man, Irvin Scott, was later arrested and charged with the murder in connection with the shooting.
According to Fairfax County police, Herbert of 1202 Springtide Place died of gunshot wounds to the upper part of the body after apparently being shot by a small caliber handgun inside an apartment at 2239 Castle Rock Square.
