Add-on heat pumps may lower heating costs between 25 and 45 percent. - An air conditioning bonus. During the summer, add-on heat pumps provide high efficiency central air conditioning. - Back-up heating. The existing furnace serves as a back-up heating source and provide the flexibility to react to changing energy costs. - Long equipment life. Since the heat pump and furnace only operate during the time when each is most efficient, both pieces of equipment should last longer.
The coucil noted that it is essential for the air distribution system to be designed for air conditioning and recommends that interested parties contact their local power supplier, the State Energy Office, the Extension Office, or VFHEC for more details about the operation and installation of an add-on heat pump.
