best tell how a big a unit ia needed. It’s much easier for the buyer to determine how efficient a unit is.
An air conditioner’s Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) shows its cooling capacity divided by the number of watts it takes to run it. The higher the EER, the less the unit costs to run. Most EER’s range from four to 12 and are on the unit label.
To get the most efficient air conditioner, find the size of unit that best fits the needs and then buy the highest EER-rated model in that size.
After buying an air conditioner or if you have aU you need, there still are things that can be done to lower power bills
The refrigerant level in the air conditoner needs to be checked at least once a year. The coils should be checked for leaks and the condenser and evaporator coils should be cleaned. The fan motor should be oiled and the air filter should be cleaned or replaced.
Many persons may desire that a service man do some of those things. Here are some details that an owner can do to allow the air condi toner to cool better and cost less to run. - Keep the thermostat at 78 degrees. - Adjust the grills to direct the flow of cool air toward the ceiling for better circulation - Don’t let foliage block the air flow around the outside part of the unit. - Shade the outside part of the unit with an awning. - Use low fan speeds on room units except when the heat and humidity are extreme. - Keep the outside air damper on room units closed except when removing bad odors.
Add-On Heat Pump. The add-on heat pump was recognized for its energy saving potential during the recent meeting of the Virginia Farm and Home Electrification Council’s (VFHEC) residential housing committee.
The council’s purpose is to promote the efficient and safe use of electricity through education and research. Its members are power suppliers, educational agencies and organizations interested in efficient and energy-saving uses of electricity.
An add-on heat pump is added to an existing oil or gas furnace that has an adequate duct system. The unit is installed with automatic controls to operate in conjunction with the existing furnace. i * ^
