To Teach

Cindy Cumins, a Rappahannock County High School and Longwood College graduate, has taken a year’s leave of absence from her teaching job in Charlottesville to teach in a Haiti mission.
Cumins will be teaching the older children of American doctors and missionaries in La Pointe, Haiti.
The mission is operated by the U.S. International United Foreign Missions. Her grandmother, Ruth Perkins of Jenkins’ Hollow, said that Cumins will teach all subjects. Cumins is an English teacher at Albemarle High School in Charlottesville.
Cumins found out about the need for a teacher at the mission through her church, Trinity Presbyterian, in Charlottesville. She then arranged for a leave of absence, and she left for Haiti on August 29.
In letters written to her grandmother, Cumins described her experiences. “I’m excited about the prospect of seeing a foreign land for the first time in my life,” she wrote.
After her arrival in Haiti, Cumins wrote, "To be honest, I haven’t experienced the culture shock I’d anticipated.” She wrote that the mountainous terrain was similar to her home.
