Copperhead bites, having a hemotoxic poison as well as some digestive enzymes will cause necrosis and fuRll1^ ing of the bite site. Not all bites, even from poisonous snakes contain venoiir so that observation and patience are necessary before a decision to use antivenom is made.
Most adults recover with or without the anti-venom. Excruciating pain is the most characteristic sign of a poisonous snake bite.
There are three pit vipers (poisonous) in the state of Virginia: the cottonmouth, the rattlesnake, and the ubiquitous copperhead; the least poisonous of the three. Ninety-six percent of all snake bites occur between May and September with peak incidence in July.
Fatalities are few and usually in children because the poison dose in relation to their body weight is greater than in an adult. On the average there are 5,000 snake bites a year in the United States with only 15 fatalities.
Our aversion to snakes may be an atavistic trait dating back to Adam and Eve’s expulsion from their earthly paradise. Yet there are more people killed by lightning than by snake bites.
