Representatives from the architectural firm of Smithey and Boynton of Roanoke presented preliminary drawings of the expansion project for the high school at the School Board’s meeting on Tuesday, April 9. The meeting was held jointly with the Board of Supervisors.
Bill Ervin, one of the representatives of the firm, told the boards that the drawings have been approved by the State Department of Education. The drawings illustrated the planned additions and renovations for the high school building.
Ervin explained that the major addition to the building will be a new gymnasium with a spectator capability of 766 people. Part of the present gymnasium will be remodelled into a 214 seat auditorium, and the other part will be used to expand the cafeteria.
The library will be added on to so that 70 people will be able to be seated in the proposed library, and a part of the present library will become a combination science lab and lecture room. Two new classrooms will be built, and one present classroom will be used to expand administration offices so that a group counselling area can be created.
Locker rooms, a multi-purpose room and a health room will be built beside the new gymnasium, and there are plans for a special education classroom. The boiler room will be extended, and a walk-in freezer will be added to the kitchen.
The drawings call for 21,000 square feet of new construction on the present building. When completed, the modular units now being used as classrooms will be removed so that a total of four additional classrooms will be
