She gave a history of hats saying that hat making was the first industry of the United States. Records indicate that Betty Custis was the first lady in the States to wear a feathered hat.
Feathers were used until 1913 when through the efforts of the Audubon Society decorating hats with feathres from wild birds was outlawed.
