Miller’s Reply, owned by Blue Ridge Hunt whipper-in Robert Pillion and ridden by Woods Winants, set the early pace, running well ahead of the rest of the field for most of the threemile race.
But, with only two fences and about a quarter-mile to go, the lead changed as Susan Sutula and Honey’s Fuel, who had been tucked in behind the leader for much of the race, pulled ahead to open up a sizeable gap.
At the wire Honey’s Fuel was ahead by a good 20 lengths with Miller’s Reply second and Marcella Smith on Juno just squeezing in for third ahead of Patti Cassel on her Bush Ruler.
“He’s such a sweetie pie,” Ms. Sutula said of her mount. “He asked on the second lap, ‘Is it time to go?’ and I said ‘No! Please wait’.”
A $1,000 purse for the maiden hurdle race attracted a lot of entries, causing that race to be split. Six horses went to the start in each division.
In the first division Gary Rose set the early pace on Mr. Cramer’s Shasta Be Good and stayed at the front until the last fence though dogged by Brian Forbes on Le Moulinet and Juliet Graham on Rep.
At the final fence, however, Shasta Be Good’s lead was swiftly and suddenly challenged from both sides as Le Moulinet moved up on the outside and Rep pressed forward on the inside.
