gates, 37 more than the number needed to clinch the nomination which, indeed, he asserted he had won. Baliles insisted he had won the lion’s share of the uncommitted and super-delegates. He conceded only 1,587 to Davis, the official party count.
Baliles’ claim of the nomination, as might be expected, drew hoots from the Davis camp. Although the Davis people admitted that Baliles was in the lead, they maintained he was far short of the number needed for the nod, and in fact was well within striking distance of being overtaken. According to the Davis count, Baliles had 1,684 delegates while Davis had 1,629, a relatively manageable 55 delegate deficit.
In addition to hoping for gains ampng. the, pnqqmnptted, and super-delegates, Davis strategists, alleging varios irregularities, are planning to challenge the caucuses in the counties of Charlotte, central Tazewell, Smyth and Giles as well as in the cities of Danville, Emporia and Harrisonburg. All told, some 200 delegates are at stake in these and other areas where challenges may be lodged.
