The first jump race of the day at the Ben Venue course was the ladies’ timber race which helped warm spectators up, at least in spirit, despite the almost gale-force winds that raged across the course.
Leading lady rider Patti Cassel, riding Splashy Lea, took the lead when starter T. Roy Wright dropped his flag.
But after three victories this season. Splashy Lea was not destined to have an easy race. Eva Dahlgren on George Ohrstrom’s Olympic Run took the lead after the first fence, setting the pace for the rest of the race as Splashy Lea tucked in behind.
Racing down a shallow incline at the bottom of the course with less than a mile to go in the 2'/2-mile race, Ms. Dahlgren urged Olympic Run on and the 12-year-old mare responded with a burst of speed that opened up a good eight-length gap between the front two horses.
