Rapp. News: How can rural counties attract and keep good teachers when there’s so much competition from higher paid professions? Guest: Well, we’re back to the hypothetical nice, clean, neat little industry that we can tax the dickens out of but won’t make any demands on oiir water or sewer or anything else. Every locality in the state is looking for that archetype of an industry. Certainly some small,, light industry within the service districts of the rural areas is something that the governing bodies should consider.
I know Clark County has brought some discussion to the board of supervisors and to the planning commission about Clarke County having their own industrial park and trying to attract a bit more of that nice, clean industry to up their industrial capacity and their tax base so they don’t have to put more and more on the homeowner.
It’s just the source of revenues which, one way or the other, is going to tell as to how we can attract and keep teachers.
