posed budget, and the reply was “yes.” “I can assure you that in the month of March we met every week to prepare the budget, and I am fortunate to serve with the members we have now,” Massie said. “When we come to you with a budget, be assured that what we bring is what we mean and there is no fat.” Gilkey said that the Supervisors appreciated that approach to the budget.
Gifted And Talented
The Board heard four teachers’ methods for and thoughts on teaching gifted and talented students during the meeting. Three teachers were present for the meeting.
Molly Hobson, a fourth grade teacher, described her multi-disciplined approach to her enrichment class. “The primary focus is on reading, and the text books give suggestions for activities after each reading exercise,” Hobson said. She told the Board that the students have written mystery stories, worked on a play and public speaking, developed their own play and., have worksheets for math enrichment.
Carol Atkins, a first grade teacher, told the Board that at first she was unsure how to proceed with gifted and talented students. “Then I looked at what the children needed and wanted to learn,” Atkins said. Some of the topics the children were interested in were current events, the background on holidays and clouds.
“I have used community resources like the Culpeper Animal Shelter, and a person from there brought out animals and taught the children how to take care of them,” Atkins said. “If I can give them a topic that they can learn about themselves, it is exciting.”
