Ned and Elisabeth stuck with it, however, and she regrets that there were not more stories recorded by Ned.
“He just had a wonderful way with words,” she said. “He could make a story seem funnier than anyone.”
“This is in gratitude to those people who gave us the gift of making us laugh,” she wrote in the Prologue. “Our laughter is with people, not at them. There is a difference.”
Ned’s tales are funny, relying on a clever use of words rather than fast-moving plots. Elisabeth Johnson finds in them several characteristics of good rural humor.
“For one thing,” she explained, “rural people love to deflate folks that have gotten ‘above their raisin.’ They love to have a joke at the hypocrite’s expense.”
