The Virginia Commission for the Arts will award an additional $1 million in grant funds for 1986-87 as a result of a budget increase passed by the 1986 General Assembly.
Former Governor Charles S. Robb in his outgoing budfet proposal requested a $500,000 increase in Virginia Commission funds. Delegate Alson H. Smith of Winchester introduced a budget amendment for an additional $500,000.
This new money brings the total Commission grant funds to $3 million. Peggy Baggett, executive director of the Commission, noted that “while we continue to receive many more applications than can be funded, this money allows the Commission more freedom to help worthwhile projects. We are grateful for the support of the General Assembly.”
The money will be divided among the existing grant programs of the Commission. The Commission provides general operating support and salary assistance for arts organizations, matches local government contributions to the arts, supports performing arts touring, funds a wide variety of arts projects, and gives cash awards to individual artists.
