Mrs. Deb Mills’ sociology class at Rappahannock County High School experienced the responsibilities of parenthood for a week. Each student cared for an egg as a parent would care for its baby.
Student Edie Eastham explained the project. “We had to make an egg baby and we had to take it around . for a week and pretend like it was our own baby. We had to pay a babysitter five cents an hour before we went out. We had to see that it was cared for every minute. We also kept a journal on it and wrote when we changed it, fed it, if the baby had a bad night and things like that. ”
The students first blew the contents out of the egg. They created a face on the egg to match the personality of their “child.” Some soon discovered that when they washed their “baby’s” face it completely washed off, so clear fingernail polish was used on the egg to act as a sealant.
Student Heather Blevins commented, “My jaws were sore from blowing out the egg. I got a small egg because I thought it would be easiest to blow but ii took me ten minutes.”
The students encountered some problems in caring for their egg. Student Susan Lesh describes one of them.
