“We need to make clear when the $300 incentive fee is available,” said Mr. Estabrook. “Do we want to award it upon the signing of the contract or on the first day that teacher reports to school?”
The board voted to award the money, designed to encourage new teachers to come to Rappahannock as well as to make it easier for them to make living arrangements, on the teacher’s first working day.
“We need to do something about the breach of contract of both new and established teachers,” said Paul Nichols. “We’ve had teachers asking to be released during the last two weeks of school. What could be more important than the last two weeks of school?”
Mr. Nichols suggested that the Rappahannock School Board report teachers in breach of contract to the state Department of Education so it becomes part of their permanent records.
