The vistas may seem open and free, “but you’re not really free — no one is. You have a background, a heritage and lots of experiences together... The ‘real world’ has more rules and regulations... and Mr. Chappell won’t be looking over your shoulder. You’ll be free -- to fall on your face,” said Ms. Sally Bristol, keynote speaker at the commencement exercises of the Class of 1986, Rappahannock County High School.
“That’s when you find out what you’re made up of,” she continued. Ms. Bristol exhorted the graduates to strive to do the best they can, but to “remember when...(the) spitballs on the ceiling; chairs glued to the floor... those ‘friendly’ comments about the Redskins and the Cowboys.” She invoked Thomas Woolfs famous saying “You can’t go home again,” adding that “you have to make life good on your own.”
