“But they all had coverage through July 1,” Ms. Bruce said. “So when the General Assembly approved the insurance pool, they made it effective July 1 — before that date, they would have had only two counties in the pool,” she said explaining Rappahannock’s predicament.

While the county and its officials will hold their collective breath, cross fingers and go through June ^ without liability coverage, the sheriffs department will not.

The firm of Alexander and Alexander has agreed to provide assigned risk automobile coverage until the Municipal League’s pool begins in July. At Wednesday’s work session, the supervisors approved payment of the $8,784 annual premium which includes comprehensive, collision and. liability for the sheriffs newer cars and liability only on the older cars.

“We have to pay the entire premium tomorrow,” Ms. Bruce told the board. “Then we’ll get the unused portion refunded when the policy is terminated on July 1, minus a penalty of around $300.”

She noted that Alexander and Alexander is the county’s former insurance carrier and will be coordinating the Virginia Municipal League’s pool.

Ms. Bruce said that the automobile coverage may not start until the insurance company’s representative gets back to Richmond with the county’s check. “We’ve asked the sheriff not to put any more cars on the road than he has to from midnight tonight until the coverage becomes effective tomorrow.”
