Following a hastily convened meeting Friday afternoon the Board of Supervisors decided to approve the county’s application to the Virginia Municipal League’s liability insurance pool.
“The rates are exorbitant; it’s highway robbery — but it’s the only game in town. You don’t have any choice,” said Alan Thornton, the county’s insurance consultant.
Clerk Diane Bruce conveyed Mr. Thornton’s recommendation to the board after a long-distance telephone consulting session Friday morning.
The information pertaining to the self-insurance pool, administered through the state insurance commission, did not arrive at the clerk’s office until Friday morning.
The deadline for the completed applications to be filed with the administrators in Richmond was the close of business Monday, June 30.
