Reverend Ernest Cornwell was recently appointed to serve as pastor of the Woodville Baptist Church.
For Rev. Cornwell, the move to Woodville was a homecoming. He was bom in Rappahannock County, not too far from what is now the Old Hollow Grocery.
Rev. Cornwell and his wife Pauline moved to Woodville from Lynchburg, where he had been serving with the Eagle Eyrie Baptist Assembly. Dr. Lawson Pankey, a friend and member of the Virginia Baptist General Board, asked Rev. Cornwell if he would act as visiting pastor to the Woodville church, which did not have a pastor at the time.
“I came up for one Sunday, then another, and another — and finally they asked me to come permanently,” he said. “It feels good to get back. It’s a lovely part of the state.”
Rev. Cornwell is quite familiar • with Virginia. In 34 years of ministry, he has started four new churches and served at a total of seven, all in the Commonwealth. The “he” is perhaps misleading, since Rev. Cornwell thinks of “me and Pauline as a team. She is instrumental in organizing the Sunday Schools and in coordinating the music. At most of our churches she directed the choirs. ”
