Alfalfa should
be cut now

Drought has resulted in alfalfa flowering even though it is only 1012 inches tall. Such fields should be grazed or mowed. Removing this growth will stimulate tiller development which, when moisture is available, will provide growth for the next harvest.
Leaving the mature growth uncut will slow regrowth and will result in energy being used for seed production which could be saved for regrowth.
it there is as much as 150 pounds of hay per acre present it will be worthwhile to bale and haul it off the field. There is also some advantage to removing it so it will not be present in the next cutting.
