Many homeowners are applying herbicides this month to control broadleaf weeds in turf. Caution must be used when treating lawns as most trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables are very sensitive to these chemicals.
The herbicides currently sold for use in turf contain one or more of the following active ingredients: 2,4-D, dichlorprop, dicamba, mecoprop and triclopyr. Some examples would be: Dacamine (2,4-D), Weedone DPC (2,4-D plus dichlorprop), Turflon (2,4-D plus triclopyr) and Trimec (2,4-d, mecoprop and dicamba). All of these herbicides can be categorized as growth regulator type compounds.
