As the month of June progressed, there was a touch of frustration, cynicism and despair in the air. My friend and neighbor Dick Atkins kept a regular check on his well, and though his water supply seemingly remained stable we both expressed disappointment that no additional rain was falling to take care of future needs.
At the Sperryville Exxon the question, “When’s it gonna rain?” was met with the response, “Probably October.”
It was a standard question from the weather department at Channel 4 in Washington: “What is your rainfall total for the month?”
And could it be that we’ve found a week in June that has a Friday? The last week of June gave us 1.33 inches of rain. Spirits have picked up (a little, anyway), the robins are happy, windshield wipers are being used and it’s almost. . .almost like having a weekend.
