Washington is again inviting everyone to visit the village at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains for an old fashioned All American Fourth of July Celebration that begins at 10 a.m. and continues through fireworks on the grounds of Avon Hall, home of William and Ramona Carrigan. This will be the 25th year the Carrigans have hosted the fireworks display.
Antiques, arts and crafts sales open at 10 a. m. on tree lined Gay Street, named for his girl friend by 17-year-old George Washington, who surveyed the area in 1749. All the bells in town will ring at noon to signal the beginning of the costumed patriotic program on the Court House lawn. Musicians from the Blue Ridge will entertain at three locations throughout the day, and there will be horse drawn wagon tours of the town (pop. 200), an antique car show and parade at 2 p.m., and a roast pig supper at 4:30 p.m.
Beginning at 6 p.m. there will be an Arabian horse show, a demonstration of how to use llamas as pack animals, children’s games, a choral presentation prior to the fireworks at dusk.
Among the temptations to be sold on Gay Street, according to Roger P. Roach, chairman of the Volunteer Fire Department sponsored event, will be antique watches and clocks, custom crafted hunting
