After these beginnings, his father agreed to let him become a minister, and he was ordained in 1881.
Neve’s history is recorded in an undated, unsigned, and untitled document in the Park archives. It appears to be the work of a church historian, and it recounts the story of the missions established by Neve and his church people during the early part of this century, up until the plans for the Park were made final.
Neve landed in rural Albemarle County by answering an advertisement in a London paper. Evidently, aristocratic people of two parishes felt that an English priest would be most suitable as their pastor. One parish, near Charlottesville, was almost exclusively English, and one, at Emmanuel, was composed of landed Virginia gentry.
Neve served his people well, but was quick to notice the plight of less affluent rural Virginians 23 years after the surrender of Lee at Appomattox. He found lost fortunes, displaced slaves, and isolated mountain people.
