Camping areas in the Forest are operated on a first-come, firstserved basis except for large group camping at Sherando Lake and Elizabeth Furnace, for which reservations should be made well in advance. Picnic shelters at Lake Moomaw and Trout Pond may also be reserved by contacting the responsible Ranger District Office.
Brooks also said that Camp Stamps have just arrived that offer campers an economical and convenient w ay to pay for their stay in the National Forest fee areas.
‘‘Camp Stamps can be purchased at 15 percent less than their face value at any Forest Service office and at certain local shops. Instead of putting cash or checks in the campground collection boxes, the Camp Stamps are simply placed in the collection envelopes. In a test trial of the new program in the West, campers liked the convenience and discount savings,” he said.
Brooks cautioned that this has been a particularly dry spring and that most of the Forest is in high fire danger. “We’ve had just enough rain to fool most people into thinking that we’re out of danger. We’re not,” he said.
